Regus takes first step in green web hosting policy with Smartbunker’s zero carbon energy data centre

July 23rd, 2007

Lincoln, UK, 23rd July 2007 – Smartbunker, the data centre division of Centrinet, a provider of managed network and secure data hosting services, today announced that Regus, the world’s largest provider of managed offices, has selected to use Smartbunker’s zero-carbon data hosting services to deliver a secure web application.

Working with Smartbunker, Regus is able to instantly reduce the carbon footprint of hosting its web application to zero, while benefiting from a highly secure, high performing data centre infrastructure that ensures best-in-class service delivery.

“Regus is an internationally recognised brand whose customers expect the highest level of service and the company to operate responsibly,” said Kelly Smith, managing director at Smartbunker. “All the elements of Smartbunker’s design, combined with Centrinet’s proven expertise, guarantee that Regus will have the service they require and genuine environmental benefits at no additional cost.”

The Smartbunker data centre is purpose built to provide high performance managed hosting services using zero carbon energy. Power used within the 30,000 square feet data centre is free from carbon emissions, and is generated entirely from renewable resources. Smartbunker’s zero carbon energy policy is a preferable alternative to carbon offsetting in which carbon emitted by traditional energy supplies is theoretically neutralised by projects designed to extract carbon from the environment. Smartbunker provides a new concept for customers looking for a highly competitive managed hosting service with zero carbon footprint.

Mike Brockington, chief technology officer at Regus, commented, “Our corporate purchasing policy gives clear guidance in that we should take the environmental implications of our supply chain into account when choosing suppliers. We have had a long-standing relationship with Centrinet, who manage our network and have always provided great service. Our requirement for hosting a secure Internet application coincided with the launch of Smartbunker. The combination of service and zero carbon footprint was exactly what we needed. For us, Smartbunker is a service whose time has come.”

To deliver guaranteed high performance with reduced environmental impact, Smartbunker exclusively uses IBM BladeCenter servers, which offer energy savings in the region of 60% over standard servers. BT provides Smartbunker with triple-redundant, tier one Internet connectivity, and Ecotricity, which leads green electricity retail and wind turbine development in the UK, supplies Smartbunker with zero carbon power generated entirely from renewable sources.

Managed hosting services provided by Smartbunker appeal to companies who are unwilling to compromise on quality of service, security and price, but who wish to benefit from Smartbunker’s impeccable environmental credentials.
