Zero Carbon vs Carbon Neutral

Widely hyped in the media, ‘carbon neutral' is really another term for carbon offsetting.

Carbon offsetting is a way of offsetting the exact amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) you produce. This normally involves planting trees (or more typically paying other people to plant trees on your behalf), or investing (directly or indirectly) in improved energy efficiency or renewable energy projects.

A carbon offset is a credit for CO2 emission reductions that can be bought and sold. The theory being that for every one tonne of CO2 you produce, one tonne is reduced somewhere else in the world. Of course, carbon trading has become big business. But it is not without its critics.

The quality and efficacy of carbon neutral schemes can vary dramatically. Some environmentalists have dubbed carbon offsetting ‘Greenwash', or ‘marketing spin', because it gives a positive public image to environmentally unsound practices.

Our low energy IBM BladeCenter™ servers utilise powersaving technology to consume up to 60% less energy than comparable blades. Combined with Smartbunker's constant subterranean ambient temperature, this saves up to104 megawatt hours per year, per rack. With a traditional data centre this would have equated to a massive 45 tonnes of CO2 per rack.
